Written in a friendly and fun yet professional tone, How to Polish Your Manuscript in Ten Days is brimming with solid writing advice supported by super helpful examples. The sections that resonated most with me were Overwriting (so guilty of that), and Formatting Your Manuscript (who doesn’t like to save time?! And you'll LOL at the chapter's subheading). The author includes a handy bonus section at the end, listing both craft and grammar resources. While sharing stellar writing advice, Anne Victory motivates, challenges, and encourages. An informative and valuable read you’ll refer to again and again. Highly recommended!
I titled this review, A Sharp Pencil because when your pencil is sharp, your lines are straight. Anne drew a straight line to the answers that were missing for me. No side shadows or blurry edges to entertain me. I'd given up on writing, or at least publishing and now I'm back in the saddle ready to ride. Other books were great, but something about Anne's book hit the heart for me.I'd highly recommend this book.
I’ve written several books and read numerous books on writing. I didn’t think there was anything ‘new’ out there. This little, information-packed gem proved me wrong and had me oohing and aaahing all over the place.Anne Victory’s 10 Lessons were a study in clear, succinct, utterly intelligible writing. It hit the perfect spot between casual tone and precise description. I wish this had been available years ago. It would have cut so many writing failures from my journey.I know the title talks about polishing a manuscript, but what she teaches about the elements of good writing is fundamental for every author. This book gets my highest recommendation.I received an Advanced Copy of this book and this is my honest review.
It is what it says on the tin--ten steps to take to polish a fiction manuscript. Some steps might be simple for some writers, but in my experience as an editor, these are the common mistakes that many writers make. Each area is clearly and simply explained. I wouldn't actually recommend that anyone publish a book that hasn't been edited, but the better shape your book is in when an editor gets it, the better job they can do. The problem areas in this book are ones that, ideally, an author would be able to take care of on their own, leaving the specialized fine-tuning to an editor.
Offers a clear, concise explanation on what to look for when self-editing your novel. Covers everything from dialogue to avoiding the infodump. Written with wit and very easy to read. A must buy for every author!
Wow! If you ever wanted to know how easy it is to self-edit a book then this is THE guide to get! In just ten easy steps Anne shows you how to do it. Personally for me the best sections were on tenses, repeating words and dialogue tags! Definitely recommend it!
