Review

Publishers Weekly "Accessible and thought-provoking. . . . An excellent spiritual guide for individual or small group use."P. D. James "Elegant and lucid."Walter Brueggemann -- author of Reality, Grief, Hope: Three Urgent Prophetic Tasks "Who better than Rowan Williams to be our teacher about the essentials of Christianity! In this clear, accessible exposition, we get Williams at his best - worldly-wise, pastorally gentle, grounded deeply in tradition, acutely alert to the real world of violence where God indwells. Williams ushers us more deeply into our best discernment of the Christian life."Anthony C. Thiselton -- author of Life after Death: A New Approach to the Last Things "A treasure. . . . Enticingly easy to read - simple yet profound, moving yet thoughtful, reassuring yet challenging. This book explains essential elements of the Christian life brilliantly but briefly, expounding themes and answering difficulties in everyday commonsense language. It lifts the heart and enriches the mind."Lillian Daniel -- author of When "Spiritual but Not Religious" Is Not Enough "This volume will become a classic for individual seekers and book groups. Speaking to those inside and outside the church - and the growing number of people who don't know where to locate themselves anymore - Williams entices us all to go deeper by reviewing the basics. It takes a theologian of depth to write a simple book about complex concerns."Michael Jinkins -- President of Louisville Prebyterian Theological Seminary "With clarity and with startling eloquence, one of the greatest theologians and most respected church leaders of our time here guides readers into a deeper understanding of the essential elements of the Christian life. Rowan Williams has written that rarest of books, a work of profound theological insight that is also lively, beautiful, and relevant."M. Craig Barnes -- President of Princeton Theological Seminary "The genius of this little book is that it gets right to the heart of the essential Christian experience. . . . We are simply invited to enter the new life discovered through the core practices of the church."Sister Wendy Beckett -- Carmelite Monastery, Quidenham "Christianity is both simple and profound. Rowan Williams understands these two levels, and how we come to the depth of what Jesus is by the simplicities of informed Christian practice. This is a handbook for Christian living."Cistercian Studies Quarterly “This is just the kind of eminently readable, provocative book that would do well for a study group or a retreat and of course for personal spiritual reading. . . . Rowan Williams is above all a pastor, and he knows well what needs to be said and heard of the Christian message these days.”Presbyterian Outlook “Rowan Williams speaks with a passion for the church, her people and her practices. So pastors, seminarians, lay leaders, people who love the church: read this book, keep it on your shelf and read it again.”  First Things “A frustrating blessing of the mysteries of faith is that we can never wrap our minds around them completely. As familiar as they may seem, there are always new angles from which to see them. In this book based on a series of lectures delivered in Canterbury Cathedral, Rowan Williams takes the four identity markers of the Christian community and helps us do just that.”

I wish this book was longer! Other than that I don't have any negative comments about this book. I particularly liked the section on prayer however. In particular, his discussion of Origen, Gregory of Nyssa and John Cassian's thoughts on prayer. If nothing else, I'm taking away on prayer the two tips: 1) Pray frequently and briefly. 2) When I get distracted, say "O God, make speed to save me."

A short and easy read about some of what Rowan Williams thinks is fundamental to being a Christian. I appreciated some of the stories and metaphors as a lifelong Christian. Sometimes going back to the basics and hearing a fresh perspective can open one's eyes to the wonder of it all again. I only wish the book were longer, but it seems to be written for a lay audience, in easy to understand language. I will probably get one of his other books as I really enjoyed this one.

I have read this small book that inspires one's soul to reflect on Baptism, Bible, Eucharist and Prayer. While "Being Christian" will have a special appeal to Anglicans and Episcopalians, it has a way of drawing others in. Written by the former Arch Bishop of the Anglican Communion, Rowan Williams writes with a clear, concise way that is understandable to the common Christian. If one wants to grow in gratitude, I highly suggest this book, "Being Christian". I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Williams is an excellent writer of high intelligence and very broad experience. It is no surprise that he is a former Archbishop of Canterbury. This book, which is very simple in construction with an Introduction and 4 parts on 4 Christian essentials (Baptism, Bible, Eucharist, and Prayer), is something like an elevated primer of those essentials. Williams is brilliant in his narrative and explanations, and most importantly, he has an understanding of the Christian faith that is a perfect blend of the historical and modern, a liturgical and spiritual formation understanding, but an understanding that stretches smoothly to broader consideration of how that faith works best, how it is at its most relevant today. It is both simple and deep. Excellent read!

Rowan Williams has become one of my favorite writers. I would include him in what I jokingly refer to as the English Invasion. He, NT Wright, Michael Breen and a number of other current English religious writers are rightly impacting American poat-christian world. This work is a good combination of easily accessible deep thinking and practical application. He addresses each of the four main topics, baptism, Scripture reading, communion and prayer in what seem lime new ways that are actually based in early christian writings. I strongly recommend all of his writings.

Rowan Williams is not only one of the leading figures of Christianity in our age, but he is a truly remarkable writer. His simple, elegant, and pithy prose powerfully conveys his meditations on four (arguably the chief four) staples of Christian spirituality. An engaging, intelligent, and challenging read, I found myself compelled by Williams's views even in the few areas where I didn't fully agree with him. I would recommend this book for any Christian wishing to deepen his or her spiritual journey.

Wonderful Primer On What It Means To Be Christian. Truly this book would be great not only for beginners but for disciples who just want to go deeper. The discussion questions at the end of each chapter would be great for group study. Truly a great read.

The best short book on what it means to be an Anglican Christian. I don't know how it works for other denominations but if you are from a similar church, I hope this works for you.Episcopalians who like to read should get this book.
