Oh my gosh this book made me cry my eyes out. I loved it and I cried. So, it has a P.S. I Love You feel, more so the movie than the book. It is about a 17 year old boy named Griffin who is a senior year in high school who just lost his ex boyfriend and the love of his life. Theo was his first boyfriend and meant everything to Griffin, but they had broken up and Theo was living in California going to college and had even met someone new, Jackson, who is now the only person who really understands Griffin. The story is between the times with flashbacks to Griffin and Theo's relationship from the beginning to the end, with Griffin dealing with grief telling the story. I loved that Griffin wasn't perfect. He was actually very flawed in his OCD, emotional instability, and refusal to open up to anyone. I can't imagine what going through that kind of lose would cause but OCD is very real and so many people just use it as a punch line. This felt more real and I know from the author it is real. He has talked about dealing with these obsessions himself, and I have real empathy for that. I had a complaint with Silvera's last book that it crapped on LGBTQ+ people, I know in real life prejudice is a hard thing to deal with and I am not gay but I didn't like reading it. I don't know if I am allowed to have that opinion but whatever. This one though I loved so much because they got to have a good relationship without insane amount of hate. The parents cared and treated them good, the friends were accepting, I enjoyed not having to read pages of hating for LGBTQ+ people. This is an emotional story. It is about loss, like death loss and that isn't something easy to go through, ever. It was heartbreaking, and sometimes just plain hard to read. It is also one of the best books I have gotten to read though.
I am a huge fan of YA contemporaries that make me feel something, and Adam Silvera certainly never lets me down in that department. His latest novel, History is All You Left Me, (out January 17th!) is no exception. My Review: FIVE STARSIt’s obvious just from reading the description that this book is going to be a tearjerker. What I didn’t expect though, was the intense rollercoaster of other emotions that I experienced while reading it. Suffice it to say, this book will give you ALL THE FEELS and then some.Silvera vacillates brilliantly between Griffin’s grief-stricken journey after his ex-boyfriend Theo dies and the history of their past together. You get to fall in love right along side them, you’ll laugh through all their silly moments, and you will MOST DEFINITELY cry. Theo’s death will of course bring you to tears, but there are other moments in this story that pack just as big of an emotional punch. Keep those tissues close! This book is brilliantly plotted and an absolute joy to read. This is definitely my new favorite YA contemporary, and I wish everyone in the world could be required to read it. We’d all be better people for it.Cover Rating : THREE STARSWhile I love the way this cover reflects the contrast in both the past and present perspectives in this story as well as the inverse emotions that Griffin feels at different points in the plot, it’s just not the prettiest cover ever.Swoon Worthiness: FIVE STARSThe guys in this story are just absolutely ADORABLE. I love all of them: Griffin, Theo, Jackson, and Wade. They are all such fantastic and REAL characters. They all have their flaws, but they’re flawed in ways they make them so much more relatable. Silvera has sprinkled just the BEST swoon worthy moments throughout this entire story, which definitely balances out the heavier emotional moments. Why You Should Read This Book:This book is BREATHTAKING. It includes great representation of both diversity and mental health issues, which is so, so, SO important for young readers and adults alike to experience.Silvera has managed to not only deliver a story with an entertaining plot but also what could best be described as an emotional roundhouse to a reader’s gut. And I do mean that in the best way possible. If you are looking for a book that will give you Every. Single. Feel. Ever…then this is most definitely a book you’ll want to put at the top of your 2017 TBR pile.
Oh Adam Silvera how come you like to break my heart so much?Silvera is such an amazing storyteller and it shines through in this story. Yes, as mentioned above, this story is heartbreaking, but it’s also so beautifully hopeful by the time you get to that last page. His portrayal of grieving for a loved one makes this incredibly emotional and you can’t help but feel for Griffin and the things he’s trying to sort out in his head. The story itself is told non-linearly and it’s done so, so well. The present pieces weave seamlessly into the past pieces and you will have feelings about everyone and everything as you turn the pages.History Is All You Left Me is truly about so much more than dealing with loss though… it’s about coming to terms with your life not ultimately being what you thought it would be, losing your best friend, dealing with your inner demons and taking control of your life and Silvera explores these in such an incredible way.I think what I loved most about this though, is that Adam’s characters are so real… like, no holds barred, you get the good, the bad, and the ugly and he doesn’t sugar coat much of anything. Griffin at times will frustrate you, and sadden you, but above all you’ll want good things for him and you’ll want him to figure out what he really needs, not what he thinks he needs. I’m going to be honest here and tell you that I had really strong feelings about both Theo and Jackson while I read this, and my heart broke repeatedly for what Griffin was forced to face.Ugh – I feel like I’m selling this as a hugely depressing book, but it truly isn’t… Adam is amazing at finding the humor in things that you might not expect there to be any. He manages to yes, break your heart into pieces, but he also manages to piece you back together with laughter like no other. If you’re looking for an amazing coming-of-age story with characters and a story that will resonate with you, then look no further. History Is All You Left Me will be shelved among my all-time favorite books and you definitely will want to grab this asap.
