Those who don't learn our sometimes shameful history are doomed to repeat it, at least in rhyme.One of the best, and saddest, purchases I've ever made.Born in 1955 in the border state of Kentucky, I saw vestiges of this even in my day as a white kid in a small industrial town. My text books had a School System stamp in them, encouraging the user to take care of the property entrusted to them. Why did they also have a CHECK ONE block with ( ) White and ( ) Colored? In 1961?Still, in 2018, are we repeating all this? Sadly, most would say we are. Some would say that's a good thing. Oh, the disgust...can't we all just see each other for what we are, not what color we are?
As our country gradually devolves back to a darker time, such a pamphlet was necessary for black citizens to use as a guide to travel safely on our nation’s highways. It’s now 2018 , and such a book seems relavent again. Read this book and get a perspective to a time when our grandparents actually had to use a manuel like this just to make it to their chosen destination alive. So sad, but true.
Very grateful that this copy of such an important historical reference book has been made available. Good luck finding and affording an original green book. This copy version allows the reader to journey to a time where safe spaces for people of color had to be compiled to avoid dangerous exchanges. It is amazing to see cities with pages of safe locations that registered with the green book and contrastly towns with maybe one gas station. An important piece of history.
A welcome reprint of an important little book. Not exactly the type of book that you "read," but an interesting reference to show what it was like for black Americans in the first half of the 19th century. It's interesting and tragic to see how few businesses welcomed blacks, and how few large or major businesses are among the nationwide listings.
Yes, it is proof of how things were and are. It also shows why we do things to this day like pack food for a trip, even thought things are so convenient today. The book was in great condition.
Learn about the history of our country from the point of view of black citizens. Imagine needing a travel book to find businesses and homes that will sell to you or give you a meal or a bed for the night. I was shocked to see that my home city in Michigan had not a single listing. This piece of history really shows you how bad things were.
An important part of the cultural history of our nation for Blacks and non-Blacks. The need for this book was real, folks, and to guide the future, we need to understand the past.
I bought this after hearing about it while watching PBS. I know this is a reproduction, but given the current political climate, it may be time to do a new one
