When I read a book, fiction or non-fiction, I want to be able to visualize everything that's happening. I want to know what the people, real or imaginary, look like and I want to know all about the setting. That's one reason I loved this book. It is filled with photographs, drawings, and maps of the individuals and terrain involved in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and the many illustrations make it much easier to follow the action. The text of the book is also very well done. The background material in the beginning is rather slow reading, but once I got into the battle, I was eagerly turning pages, thumbing back and forth from the narrative to the maps to the pictures, and I found that most of my questions were answered. Granted, some information about the final phase will never be known because of the absence of surviving witnesses, but the author presents evidence to support what appears to have happened on Custer Hill. Many of the illustrations have lengthy captions, which are important but which tend to interrupt the narrative, and sometimes the captions are placed on the pictures and the colors make them hard to read. But these are minor criticisms. The important point is that this book brings the Battle of the Little Bighorn to life, and it makes a reader want to visit the site. Anyone interested in the battle should definitely read this book.
I have a collection of Custer/ Little Bighorn books and this just added another page to the long asked question of what happened. Nice photos, maps and acounts, cant wait to actually travel out there and visit.
Loved This Book read it before I went to The Little Big Horn Battlefield it really gave me an insight as to what took place.

Somewhat dated. Basic facts are covered and gives you some idea of what to expect. The presentation on site better tells the Indian point of view.
