I listened to the audio of this book. I loved it.First, the narration is outstanding. The narrator has a beautiful voice, a great mix of vocalizations, and good pacing. She perfectly captured the personality of the characters and the humor within the story. Grade = A+Second, the story itself was excellent. The mystery takes place at a writer's convention in the heat of St. Petersburg, Florida. The main character, Viola, single and a 42 yr old writer of historical romance novels, discovers the victim and feels compelled to figure out what happened, especially after losing confidence in the lead detective (a handsome man, but mediocre and prickly investigator). From there, a small group of writers forms to try to solve the mystery. The story flows well and doesn't meander. It has some great humor, a budding romance, and a great ending. There is no graphic sex, violence, or foul language. Grade = A
This was a very enjoyable read. I would have given it 5 stars except for the major plot gaff.On page 122, the bartender Becky tells Viola the murdered Andrea was Kyle's girlfriend. Then on page181, Viola says she wants to know who Andrea's boyfriend was and Viola's sidekick Cheryl says it was Kyle - and the information comes as a big surprise.Major, major plot flaw. Otherwise I enjoyed Viola's character, the humor, and the writing very much. Personally, I'm surprised at a writer with as much experience as Ms MacLeod making such a mistake. Hopefully a correction is coming.
This was my first time reading this author and I found her book to be quirky and fun.Viola is a historical romance author and she and her friend are on vacation/attending a writers conference. While they are there one of the writers is murdered. She wasn't the nicest so there are plenty of suspects.Viola is the one that found the body and her friend had a bit of a cat fight with the lady earlier so they are both on the detectives suspect list. This prompts Viola to decide to find out who the killer is on her own, landing her in trouble a few times. She also meets hunky mystery/thriller writer Lucas Salvatore and she has no clue why he wants to hang out with her but she ends up bring him in on the hunt for a killer. As she tries to find out who the murder is someone is out to murder her so she best figure out whodonit before she becomes the next victim.Okay so this was a fun read but it was a bit cheesy at sometimes but I think that is what made it so quirky and fun. It has a good mystery and kept you guessing.Viola was interesting to say the least, she writes historical romance books about hunky cowboys and she is a little out there. She was just funny.I thought the author kind of poked fun at romance authors and it did make me laugh a bit. Overall I really laughed a lot at this fun short read. I will probably be on the look out for the next book in this series to see what other trouble Viola can get into.
Viola and her best friend, Cheryl, are at a writer's conference in Florida. Natasha, the best selling romance writers is murdered the first night they are there. Because Cheryl had a fist fight with Natasha and Viola found the body both of them are suspects.I like cozy mysteries and I do not expect them to have the depth of War and Peace, but this was just too much for me. I am sure it was just me, but I felt that there were too many trivial side trips. It is fast moving, that was a good thing. I think my big problem was I did not like Viola very much. And Cheryl acted rather dim.For me, this was simply not a good fit.
Let me introduce you to Viola Roberts, formerly an accountant but now a successful romance writer. Attending a writer's conference in St. Petersburg, Florida with her best friend, Cheryl Delaney, should be a nice vacation, until she stumbles across the very dead body of Natasha Winters. Natasha was the top selling romance author, a Cougar, a lush, in the middle of a nasty divorce and someone you didn't want to get on the bad side of. Viola becomes a prime suspect for discovering the body but Cheryl soon takes her place after the police discover she had a knock down catfight with Natasha at the Meet and Greet party. With the help of Lucas Salvatore, a hot and hunky thriller writer, the girls are determined to find the real culprit before Detective Costa arrests one or both of them. I really enjoyed meeting these well developed characters. Viola is sassy and snarky, Cheryl is the girl next door and Lucas is suave and always coming to the rescue. I enjoyed this murder plot with its many red herrings that will keep you guessing right to the grand finale. I want to read more in this entertaining series.
In chapter 13 her character Viola finds out that Kyle is Andrea's ex-boyfriend, however in Chapter 20 she receives this information as fresh news that solves the case. Maybe she forgot.
