It’s a well written book that details the evolution of coaches that originate from the Cruyff school thought.Be aware that this is the same book also published under the title “Legacy†by Jonathon Wilson. This is not immediately clear in the description. I ended up buying the same book twice thinking they were separate. Very disappointing.
Wilson writes with your usual clarity and concision and includes analysis, and surprising access for a book that shows how Barcelona really was the crux of modern football. Definitely worth reading if you are interested in the subject.
Does a great job of following Cruyff and how he impacted Mourinho and Guardiola and their approach to the game. Also tells a great story about how the two of them impacted each other and the personal and professional relationships between them. The first half of the book is great if you are looking for something more like a Barcelona version of "The Ball is Round" and the second half is great if you are looking for a great soccer story.
Contrary to the negative review(s) - at this time, there are only 2 reviews, 1 of which is 1 star - the book goes into great detail about the tactical nuances and differences between the various Barca managers/assistant managers since Cruyff (Pep, Mourinho, Van Gaal, Riijkard, Koeman, etc) and how they all changed or evolved, or not, over time. It's true that much of the book is centered around Mourinho, but that is only because, over time, he significantly diverged from the Cruyffian principles employed by Barcelona. He essentially became anti-Barcelona, which is why I think the author dedicated so much time in the book to Mourinho. I thought the whole thing was fascinating. Yes, it's true you can get a lot of information contained in this book from other sources, but that is missing the point. The point of this book is how all the various managers and assistants, directors of football, the Barca board, etc have, since the time when Johan Cruyff revolutionized Barcelona as a club, changed over time. Just look at La Masia now compared to the days of Pep. You very rarely hear about any La Masia players making it into Barca's 1st team. This year (2018-19 season) I think that has changed slightly, but in the years since Pep left his manager position at Barca, the club has bought more players than they've promoted from the youth ranks. At any rate, it's a great book for any Barca fan, or any serious football fan. I wouldn't recommend it for the casual fan, though.
Book is a retread of well known stories about Cruyff, Guardiola, Mourinho and more. Has very little about tactics or the evolution of them. A ton of time spent on Mourinho’s career, which doesn’t make that much sense since he doesn’t play anything like Barça.
