Let me just say that if I had read You Asked for Perfect when I was seventeen, anxious AF, and more worried about school than I was about trivialities like eating or sleeping, I would have:1. laid down on the floor2. curled up in a ball around this gorgeous cover3. cried my stressed, depressed, weary little heart out until I couldn't cry anymoreLaura perfectly captures that feeling of helplessness and desperation and utterly overwhelming anxiety in a way that is both believable and relatable, and rings so true that you can't help but feel it. You Asked for Perfect made me feel nostalgic, and understood, and like a part of a community that I didn't even know existed for so long, and I genuinely hope the teen readers picking it up will feel that way too. This book is important, and both seventeen-year-old Lauren and present-day Lauren are just so glad it exists in the world now.

Ariel Stone is a high school senior who has worked hard since his freshmen year to get into Harvard. He has a plan. He wants to be the first chair violinist and the class valedictorian, and he believes he has both firmly secured. However, when he fails an AP Calc quiz, everything that he has worked for feels like it’s slipping away.He visits his guidance counselor’s office to discuss how to best handle this, and his guidance counselor suggests a tutor. Ariel decides to ask Amir, a fellow classmate who graded Ariel’s failed quiz for help. However, Ariel realizes that he may have asked the wrong person to tutor him because he may actually be falling for Amir.Laura Silverman’s You Asked for Perfect is a brilliant book that a very specific number of teenagers need to read. I’ve gone through this high stress cycle of constantly doing homework, feeling like I have no time to do anything but that and volunteering for college applications. I’ve felt the exact pressure of what it’s like to finally get that coveted position in band, only for it to not be what I expected. I even ended up as the valedictorian. But at what cost?I wish I had this book earlier because I was doing to myself the same things that Ariel is doing to himself, but I didn’t realize what I was doing until I was no longer in that high pressure place.Other high points: Ariel is Jewish, and this is very much a part of who he is. We see his family celebrate some of the high holidays, and he and his family regularly attend synagogue. His faith is important to him. Ariel is also bisexual, and this is not an issue at all in the story to anyone. His parents actually encourage a relationship with a male before Ariel is firmly committed to wanting to pursue a relationship. There are also strong family relationships, and parental figures are very present in this book. The diversity in this book is also very present and very real. This is a book that’s just too perfect (sorry for the accidental pun) to fully convey how awesome it is so you will need to pick this one up to see for yourself how amazing it is.

I loved this book! It "perfectly" captured the pressures and atmosphere of today's high schools for some of the high achievers. My children went to a very competitive public school and I witnessed first-hand many of the situations and anxieties of the characters in Silverman's book. Even as an adult, I could relate to that feeling of being in over my head and not knowing how to find my way out. There was great character development, the plot moved right along, and the chemistry between the characters in a budding relationship was palpable. Even though I'm almost a senior citizen myself, the description of a brushed shoulder or a sighting of one's love interest across the room brought me right back to high school. If you like this, check out her first novel, "Girl Out of Water". Can't wait for another Laura Silverman book!

As a retired high school librarian, I have seen the kids that are the characters in Laura Silverman's novel. The kids who are juggling AP classes, volunteer activities, sports, jobs, all while trying to be #1 in their class. All in order to get the college admission of their dream. Even my own 8th grade granddaughter is stressing right now about picking the right high school classes in order to keep her class rank up. As I write this, we are hearing of celebrity parents offering bribes to get their kids into Ivy League schools, but Laura's novel targets the kids who apply that pressure on themselves and the mental, social, emotional, and even physical anxiety they inflict on themselves. This is more of a reality than the headlines about a handful of celebrities. Good job, Laura Silverman, I'm looking forward to your next novel.

"You asked for Perfect" was a great read. It is a realistic view of the academic pressure that high students must endure. The characters were very well developed and thought provoking. I enjoyed the book cover to cover!

I'm a high school English teacher, and the pressure Ariel faces in this book is ENTIRELY relatable to many of my students. I felt stressed just reading parts of it because it was so spot-on to the things I hear students say every day. Laura Silverman has hit another home run with this book - her first book was a major hit with my students and I have no doubt this one will be as well.

Author does an incredible job of making us see what life is like from the student's perspective. This is a wonderful book for any teen, parent, or teacher!

The main character is LGBTQ+ and Jewish. The struggles he faces as an over-achieving senior felt real and hit close to home. Beautiful story
