I'm a fan of Guy Antibes. He's a talented and prolific writer of fun escapism. And I've enjoyed this series. This final book is one I appreciate because I get really disappointed if a series is incomplete, so for completionists like me it is a must have. One nice thing about this last book is that Antibes has dialed back the use of easy to use mind control magic. In earlier installments the use of mind control powder had the potential to escalate to ridiculous levels as the series progressed. In this book it is used barely at all. I'm not against a book with mind magic, mind you, but when anyone can perform the magic the plot can get almost farcical as characters inflict mind magic on people and others speed to undo it at an increasingly frenetic pace. Plus it can become a lazy plot filler. So Kudos for keeping that plot device from spiraling out of control.I do have reservations about this last book. I have to say that I found the constant and un-relenting pedantry annoying. You never get to just observe the characters doing anything and figure out what is going on yourself. Instead, *everything* is explained, usually by the characters. They explain everything redundantly. It feels like the book is nothing but explanations. It's the antithesis of, say, cinematic story telling. The characters explain what they are doing before they do it. They explain it while they are doing it. And then they explain it after they did it. Sam in particular will repeatedly explain his actions, his skills and his life story to anybody - strangers, enemies, anybody. He keeps a few things to himself, but he will always explain stuff in tedious detail over and over again, all in stilted 4th grade-level short sentences and limited vocabulary. In a way, Antibes utterly abandons showing in favor of telling for most of the book and it's exhausting being constantly lectured to as if you are a five year-old. On top of that every character talks the same. You can't tell who's talking by how they talk. It's as if everybody is the same person. This is the first Guy Antibes book since The Hand of Grethia that I felt was a trial to finish rather than a delight. Each scene felt contrived, especially the scattered crimes Sam awkwardly encounters for the convenient demonstration of his snoop skills. The crimes, because reasons, are committed using pollen magic whether it makes sense to do so or not so that Sam's unique abilities can nearly instantly solve the crime. The idea, say, that people don't know they create distinctive colors that everybody can see and recognize when they magically create objects ("Not many people know this," explains Sam as he instantly solves a crime) is ridiculous, and completely unjustified. As if nobody realizes that all of their objects are blue, or purple, or whatnot. That's just one of many examples of awkwardly contrived problem solving in this installment of the series. All fiction is contrived, but when well written you don't notice that fact. And here the contrivances stand out because they seem very much stuffed into the plot in a hurry, like someone is typing at speed with no time to look back and second guess.I want to see Guy Antibes succeed. His other books are some of my go to escapism for re-reading. I think his Warstone Quartet is perhaps his most sophisticated series. And I still like and recommend pretty much every book Guy Antibes has written. This latest one, less so. If it had been the first of the series I wouldn't have read the rest. So, please give Guy Antibes a try, but don't start with this book. Several of his series are included with Kindle Unlimited and are fun and a great deal.

To be honest, it felt rushed together. I would have preferred a more detailed and drawn out story ( in a good way) , however it was decent at best, a disappointment at worst. Like I mentioned, it felt rushed and there was no feeling of satisfaction or closure at the end. I put off reading this as soon as it was released , partly due to being in the midst of another series, and because of that, wanting to wait and be able to give it the full attention it deserved. I was lefr feeling mildly disappointed. Some authors end a series better than others, and while this certainly isn't the worst, it is also far from the best. Mediocre is probably the best word for it. I was hoping for so much more as I came to love this series, and it saddens me that I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked.

just as i loved the first four i also loved this. so many events and twists that built up into a battling ending that satisfied. a wonderful series.

I really liked the book it was well written and plot lines were very good. The only criticism I have is it felt like there should have been three books. He really rushed everything in Baskin. Overall really good book. I like a follow author and read quite a few of his books. The character development throughout the series was very good. He left me wanting more and sadly there will be no more in this series.

Loved this book! All of the character and skills and the mc's crafting were masterfully developed and used to create a wonderful successful crescendo! Awesomely well done!

A must read, as usual the story is very original and gives you hours of enjoyment. Filled with adventure, magic, family, violence just the way I like them.

This series was a good read. I would have enjoyed a couple of more installments as I enjoyed the characters greatly.

Good series. Would like more. I hope for more stories with these characters in the story line. Well tolled story.
