I never review books online, mainly because it takes me so long to read them these days. This one is the first one I have read in one sitting in a very long time. Due to my son's swim lessons, at 8:00 last night, I am crawling into bed, exhausted, but not wanting to sleep yet. I pick up this book my husband got me for my birthday, thinking "I'll read a couple chapters, until about 9, and head to bed." First off, the story caught my attention within a few paragraphs. Most books, even by my favorite of authors, take a chapter or two to get into, and there is always a stopping point. That brings me to my second point...THERE WAS NO STOPPING POINT!! The story flowed so freely, was so well put together, and the mystery and family dynamics were intriguing. I looked up at the clock at 10...10:30..."how did it get to 11?" and finally at 11:30, I realized I was in it for the long haul and might as well finish!! My husband turned over at 12:15, as I was turning off the light, and asked if I finished the book. Told him yes, and that I was totally blaming him for my lack of sleep! I have read and own many of Kim's books, but none have held my attention like this one has.
What a compelling story of three generations of women in the same family affected by a tragedy in the family 70 years ago. They look for closure and grow in faith as the story progresses. I could not put it down,I found myself reading late in the night and early in the morning to finish this book in two days. I HAD to download this to my Kindle after I read the Look Inside part of it on amazon to see if it was something I might enjoy reading. I was so captivated by the disappearance of Maggie and her sister's anxiety and feelings of guilt that I had to buy it and finish the fascinating story. Characters were portrayed so vividly and realistically with flashbacks giving more details about the struggles in the relationships of the women from 3 different generations. The focus on prayers and the Scripture quotations were encouraging and make this a truly great Christian fiction book.
This was a wonderfully written book of family relationships, both functional and somewhat dysfunctional. The storyline of "bringing Maggie home" was well written and laid out in a logical way. I love how the interactions and feelings between the daughter, mother, and grandmother played out as the story progresses and the surprising way (to me) that the truth about what happened to Maggie was finally discovered. A beautiful and special story.
This book is soooo good! I plan to reread it immediately! The story weaves in and out of 3 different generations of women in the same family. Also the timing weaves in and out during the happenings of all 3 women. Fascinating read! I found myself identifying with each of the women at different points in their journeys. Kim is such a great writer - I NEVER miss reading anything she has written! I actually recommend all of her books!
A really good book, but first chapter threw me off, but that was just a building chapter I guess. It uses three perspectives to write it (daughter, mother, granddaughter). I feel like the overall plot is somewhat predictable, but the story within that plot is really the best part of the book. Super great! Highly recommend!
Mother Daughter relationships are sometimes very strained. Sometimes it starts with one woman being hurt so deeply a bitterness develops and it gets passed down to the next generations. This story kept me turning the pages as I watched the deep hurts in these relationships come out into the open. Even in devotion and love for others we can make mistakes that hurt a lifetime. But God is always faithful if we turn our hearts to Him.
Story line was clever and the ending very satisfying. Left me sad for Hazel's parents as they never discovered the truth of what happened to their child. That is tragic. I felt the book was really drawn out more than necessary to know the main actors in it..a little too much "fluff". But I made it thru too the end and thought the plot was good..
