I was diagnosed with Asperger's and Autism Spectrum Disorder at 17 years old. I am now an adult attending college, and seeing as this book advertises itself as a guide for adults like me I expected to receive helpful advice pertaining to my situation. However, most of the information in this book could easily be gained through a quick google search on each topic. Additionally, though it is intended for adults, the tone of the book comes across as though it should be for a much younger audience and is often condescending. The author frequently stereotypes Aspies as well. Not everyone on the spectrum is a gamer or has a gaming addiction, which is something that is curiously focused on throughout the book. Perhaps most unfortunately is the citation of Autism Speaks as a reliable source for assisting people on the spectrum. Autism Speaks has never prioritized the best interests of autistic people and should not be seen as a "voice" for people on the spectrum. This book feels like it would be much more beneficial towards a younger audience when it comes to advice concerning social skills. If you're an adult on the spectrum like me you would be much better off reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie (the original, not the "modernized" version). It was much better at explaining how to express your thoughts and opinions and how to settle disagreements without upsetting others, while "Asperger's and Adulthood" will simply tell you the basics that you likely already learned by middle school. I will say that when it comes to discussing mental illnesses that many Aspies suffer (depression, anxiety, executive function disorders, etc.), this book does so in a very empathetic and open-minded way. If you're an adult with Asperger's, I do not recommend this particular book.

Being an adult with Asperger's myself, I already got curious by the subtitle: a guide to working, loving and living. The back cover is promising: 'Your participation in the institution of adulthood is required, and it's totally possible to do it on your own terms.' That quote is an example of what I like most about this book: it speaks directly to the Aspie in a way that makes clear that what you like and need is very important. You don't have to be more neurotipical or anything, it's really okay and sometimes even preferred to be Aspie. I like how the book is positive about Asperger's.As a read along, I found out I am not really the target audience for this book. Although I am 24 years old, I have lived on my own since I was 18, I am married and I have a job that I am actually good at. But I think that this book is really helpful for young adults who are on the edge of living on their own / graduating. It adressess some stuff that you really need to think about - with or without Aperger's - and that can be overwhelming, especially when dealing with Asperger's. For people who already figured out a way to live on their own and are doing quite well, its not really helpful anymore.Something I didn't like was the stereotyping. As I progressed in the book, a picture developed of an individual that spents most of its time playing videogames, that dresses only for comfort and lacks any social skills. At first I thought that the book was mostly aimed at boys (which I still find is the case, but since there are more guys with Asperger's than girls, its not very surprising) but in the end I find that the book aimes at a fictional 'middle'. Sure, there are a lot of aspies playing videogames and not attending to their looks, but there are also a lot of other 'types'. For no one aspie is the same as another. I for me understand the struggle of taking care of yourself, but not by lack of interest. I felt a little bit 'left out'. (And also quite happy with how I am doing, as I was reading that I could do a lot worse.)The structure of the book is quite clear, although I don't understand the function of the blue boxes. For a book that is intended for aspies I should recommend to make the structure as clear as possible.I like the way this book is practicle. It presents a lot of suggestions to find what you need in the world, outside this book. It really is a guide.
