Wow. I got this as a long shot, since our 18 month old screamed and cried each time we brushed his teeth.I still can't believe it actually worked, but he's not cried since, and it's way less stressful for everybody involved.They rhymes themselves are pretty cringe-worthy, and were clearly written more by the dental group involved, than by anybody who has ever met a child - but whatever. The page where you have the pull-out toothbrush and get to brush the teeth is worth the price alone.Great purchase.
My toddler granddaughter LOVES this book! Not only does she want us to read it repeatedly, but she sits and studies it on her own. I wish they had made the paper toothbrush out of cardboard instead of paper. It is on a string and she loves to pull on it to brush not both the Muppets' teeth and her own teeth. We have it held together with many layers of tape. She doesn't mind, but I don't know how much longer we can keep it patched together. The other parents were right- this book has helped teach her to brush her teeth. Before she would have a fit if we didn't put a huge gob of toothpaste on the brush. Now she is accepting (most of the time) that a little bit is the right amount.
If you are trying to ease your child into brushing his or her teeth, this is a fun book to get them started. Granted, it is a pop up book and easily ripped or torn; however, it is a good time to teach your child to be gentle with books. This book is beautifully engineered to keep your child attentive to the book until the very end. Please know that this is a book that requires parent/guardian interaction to teach the brushing concept and to prevent the book from being destroyed. (Children are naturally curious about how things work and move and if left to explore the book on their own, it will most likely be destroyed.)As an early interventionist/developmental therapist, I highly recommend this book!
It’s a cute book, and while I like it, just like the “night night Elmo†book I think it’s missing some things. Particularly FLOSSING! I bought it because one other review mentioned flossing was in the book, but it’s not. Any dentist will tell you that flossing is more effective at removing plaque than brushing alone. Flossing is the hardest part of brushing my toddler’s teeth, and I wanted a book that shows Elmo and his favorite characters doing all the necessary steps of taking care of our teeth... I might have to write in the book with a sharpie the extra step of flossing. I also know that dentists will tell you that you should brush after every meal, generally that would be 3 times a day, and this book only says morning and night, I wish it simply said after every meal and before bed, another edit I may have to personally make to it...The Night, Night Elmo book also does not have any step of brushing or flossing before bedtime... pretty odd to be missing such an essential part of self care in children’s books that are claiming to be helpful to teach kids about self care.
Very cute book! Purchased for my 21 month old, he quickly understood what the little attached toothbrush was for and has even tried to give the little monster mouth some milk. The moving pieces and toothbrush are easily ripped and we’ve had to tape a few of the pieces back together. I would recommend more for an older toddler, but if you purchase with the understanding that pieces may get torn- it does teach younger toddlers how to brush and help get them interested in brushing.
Getting my 2 year old to brush her teeth was a hug struggle. I bought this book out of desperation. And boy, did it work!!! She loves it. Every pop up page talks about a different stage of brushing (i.e., how to and how much tooth paste to put on a brush, actual brushing of teeth, cleaning tongue, rinsing the mouth, and final page shows the dentist's office) with a different Sesame St character. The brush included is a bit flimsy, but remember this is a $5 book. You can't expect them to include a plastic brush or something. Also, the flimsy brush still still does it's job. My daughter loves to brush the pop-up character's teeth with that it. It's a great book!
Our 15 mo old loves Elmo, and was transfixed by this book. This is very similar to the Bedtime Elmo book. Only downside is the folding and moving flaps are not very tough paper, and I think they won't survive too many readings. Still, worth it at the price.
I got this book to encourage my daughter to associate fun with brushing her teeth since it is still a struggle to get her to willingly want to brush them right now. She liked the book but on the first read she tore one of the pop up parts(the one where you use the pop up tab to assist Zoe with brushing her tongue). She went over the book a couple of times on the day we received it and then lost interest. Maybe this is better for introducing your children to the concept of brushing rather than having them be more than a year into the process and introduce what may seem baby-ish to them at that point.
